I applaud Parks Canada for closing the section of Highway 1A.

I am a cyclist and do enjoy riding without the threat of cars. My friends and I feel very privileged to have this luxury.

But what makes me the most happy, which I don’t think the people in the cars think about, is the safety of the animals, in particular bears. This time of the year is when bears are down in the valley, so having no cars around to jeopardize their existence is a necessity.

We all know what happens when a bear comes in contact with a speeding car.

Let’s all hang our heads in sadness and mourn the recent loss of the mother bear and her two cubs, just west of Lake Louise.

Do we want to lose more of these majestic animals on Highway 1A?

Have patience, folks. The road will re-open again in a week for you to drive on for the rest of the summer.

Enjoy the drive, take your time and remember, it is a 60 kilometre-per-hour maximum zone.
