In regards to the letter to the editor in the Aug. 15 edition of the Outlook “changes in Wildlife Act and problem grizzlies could help” from Nickolas Kunz.
The Ministerial Order Alberta Regulation 115/2024, published in the June 29, 2024 Alberta Gazette found in part 2 on page 317 uses the word “hunt” or “hunting” in four different places:
- “(2) The minister may issue a grizzly bear management authorization for the purpose of hunting a grizzly bear if”
- “(a) the geographic area where grizzly bear hunting is permitted,”
- “(b) the period of time during which hunting is allowed,”
- “0.1Despite its status as a threatened animal, the hunting of Ursus arctos (brown (grizzly) bear) is permitted under section 53.1.”
I suggest Minister of Forestry and Parks Todd Loewen should read the orders he signs. I suggest people on both sides of the issue should read the order as published by the Alberta government.
The language is simple and it is clear that the hunting of grizzly bears is now legal in Alberta. This ministerial order should be rescinded before a large mammal gets hurt or killed – there are many times when grizzly bears win when faced with guns.
