LETTER: Sewage smell in Canmore needs resolving

LETTER: The smell is unacceptable in a town with a tax base as wealthy as ours.

In 2022, Canmore administration admitted there are serious quality of life issues for Canmore residents downwind from the wastewater treatment plant. In 2022, Mayor Sean Krausert and council committed funds and a request for proposal to mitigate the foul odour affecting thousands of Canmore stakeholders.

Fortunately, I am less burdened by foul smell because I reside pleasantly upwind. However, I must tolerate the odour daily when travelling in Canmore. The smell is not confined to warm weather, it offends throughout the year.

The smell is unacceptable in a town with a tax base as wealthy as ours.

Why has the Town and council failed taxpayers so miserably?

If mitigation is in progress, why are there no updates to the public and why has the foul smell worsened?

Are stakeholders dealing with over-tourism sewage issues or is this simply a public relations failure?

I share the opinion of many property owners: the Canmore CAO, managers, mayor and council are incompetent and cannot be trusted to manage a sewage plant or the future of Canmore. All construction and population growth should stop in Canmore as the problem will only worsen without infrastructure upgrades for sewage.

The lack of intelligence surrounding this issue is mind-boggling. Someone needs to take responsibility. The foulness is intolerable. Canmore taxpayers must hold Town administration and council accountable.
