Major facelift to Banff community park moves forward

The upgrades at Banff Rotary Park are expected to be completed in November 2024.

BANFF – A $1 million donation to a community park in the Banff townsite will pave the way for new playground equipment and a multi-use sports court.

The Banff Rotary Park, located near Banff Avenue and Badger Street, is undergoing the major renovation that’s slated to be completed in November 2024.

The Wim and Nancy Pauw Foundation committed significant funding, which will be used toward developing a fully inclusive playground that caters to users of all abilities, including those with limited or restricted movement.

However, an additional $250,000 is needed to advance the park project. To start the fundraising efforts, an online silent auction is open until Sept. 1 at banffrotary.org.

"We are grateful to the Wim and Nancy Pauw Foundation for their generous support,” said Dean Cooper, President of the Banff Rotary Club, in a media release. “With their help, we can now move forward with our vision of creating a park that will be enjoyed by children and families for years to come. This partnership exemplifies the power of community collaboration and active living."

The redesign includes a day shelter, a new washroom facility, and a picnic space with shaded areas. The sports court will offer outdoor skating in winter and a multi-use basketball/pickleball court in spring and summer.

"We are pleased to be a part of this incredible initiative,” said Cathy Geisler, executive director of the Wim and Nancy Pauw Foundation, in a media release. “We believe in the power of community and the importance of accessible recreational spaces for fostering connections and promoting well-being. This project aligns perfectly with our mission to enhance the quality of life in the Bow Valley, and we are proud to contribute to its success."

The Rotary Club of Banff has maintained the park in partnership with the Town since the 1970s. Additionally, more funding has been earmarked for creating public art installations, building on the space’s energy and making it more engaging for users.

Banff Rotary also received a $563,000 matching grant from the province through the Community Facility Enhancement Program for the project.
