BANFF – Banff RCMP were quick to nab suspects of an organized theft ring in Banff.
Police say they received reports of theft of high-end clothing from two Banff businesses on Aug. 26, noting video surveillance detected an organized theft involving four individuals, including one who distracted an employee while others concealed and stole clothing items.
“It appears that travelling criminals, who look to have originated from Ontario, are an active working organized crime group stealing at various points across Alberta and Canada,” said Sgt. Natalie Rice of Banff RCMP.
Rice said a switched-on employee observed the suspects on Bear Street on Aug. 27, and investigators were satisfied they were the same people as in the video surveillance.
She said the investigation led to discovery of a rented vehicle, which was seized by police.
“Search of the vehicle led to recovery of stolen property as well as a large quantity of property with original packaging/tags,” she said.
Charges include theft over $5,000, possession of stolen property over $,5000 and participation in a criminal organization. Other charges may follow.
Rice said two suspects were taken into custody by Canada Border Services Agency, adding three of the group did not have legal status in Canada.
The investigation is ongoing, said Rice, and the RCMP are working to identify the origin of some of the recovered property.
“RCMP would like to thank the local businesses for having good quality operating video surveillance and detailed record of inventory, which resulted in identifying the suspects and supporting all charges,” she said.
