MD OF BIGHORN – A downed power line in Dead Man’s Flats has cut power to the entire hamlet.

The MD of Bighorn confirmed the downed line is the reason for the power outage, but is still investigating how it was damaged. A fire at the site of the incident has also been reported and a nearby outbuilding has been destroyed.

The site is near Bighorn Inn & Suites, where demolition work to take down the old motel is currently taking place.

“We do know there’s been no injuries reported,” said Bighorn’s communications coordinator Thomas Judek of the incident.

“At this time, I don’t know anything else about the actual fire there.”

Fire crews from Canmore and Exshaw responded, along with EMS, RCMP and FortisAlberta.

“It’s just a small structure fire. Not suspicious. No injuries,” said RCMP media relations officer Cpl. Gina Slaney, in an email.

The MD confirmed the fire was out by 2:45 p.m. and said power is being restored and expected to come back online by 6 p.m. tonight (Aug. 8).

The Outlook will update this story as more information becomes available from the MD.
