BOW VALLEY – A heat warning has been issued for Canmore, Banff National Park, Kananaskis, Îyârhe (Stoney) Nakoda and the MD of Bighorn.
Temperatures are forecasted to reach highs of 30-35 degrees Celsius starting Sunday (July 7) and throughout the week, with overnight temperatures staying at 14 degrees or higher until the midweek.
“Overnight lows in the mid teens will not provide much relief from the heat,” states the warning from Environment Canada.
On Monday, the UV index is expected to be 7 (high) and 8 (very high).
Environment Canada asks people to monitor signs of heat stroke or heat exhaustion, which include high body temperature, lack of sweat, confusion, fainting and unconsciousness.
“Heat warnings are issued when very high temperature conditions are expected to pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion,” stated the warning.
The warning states to pay special attention to infants, children, seniors, individuals with pre-existing lung conditions, heart, kidney, nervous system, mental health or diabetic conditions, outdoor works and those who are socially isolated.
Residents and visitors are advised to take the follow precautions.
- Rescheduling outdoor activities to cooler times of the day
- Take breaks from the heat by going into cooled indoor spaces
- Stay hydrated with non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated beverages beverages
- Don’t leave kids, people or pets inside a closed vehicle for any amount of time.

Temperatures for Canmore, Kananaskis, Îyârhe (Stoney) Nakoda and the MD of Bighorn are expected to fall to the mid-20s by Friday (July 12).
A vast majority of Alberta and British Columbia are also experiencing a heat warning.
