KANANASKIS – A woman is in hospital from injuries sustained in a 20-metre fall from Grizzly Peak in Kananaskis Country on Sunday afternoon (July 21).
“Several bystanders aided the hiker and alerted authorities,” said Pam Davidson, Forestry and Parks press secretary in an email.
The woman was in “potentially life-threatening condition" and was heli-rescued by Kananaskis Mountain Rescue and Alpine Helicopters from the remote area of Peter Lougheed Provincial Park.
“Kananaskis Mountain Rescue specialists, Alpine Helicopters and other partners responded to the scene and lowered the patient by heli-sling to EMS waiting below,” said Davidson.
Ground paramedics were concerned about head injuries during the time of transport.
“The attendant paramedics did have concerns for head injuries, although other injuries due to the high fall were probably investigated,” said Stuart Brideaux, an Alberta Health Services public education officer.
The patient was transported by ground ambulance which rendezvous with STARS air ambulance at the heli-pad adjacent to the Stoney Nakoda Resort and Casino at approximately 4 p.m. The patient was flown to Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary.

“This was a multi-agency response, with Alpine Helicopters initially extracting the patient from the remote area for hand off to local ground EMS, who subsequently rendezvoused with the STAR-1 helicopter,” said Blake Robert, STARS media relations, in an email.
