Popular Kananaskis trail, climbing routes closing for rockfall work

The closure is in effect from Sept. 3 to Oct. 15, or until further notice, according to an Alberta Parks advisory.

KANANASKIS – Ha Ling Trail and the mountain’s climbing routes will be closing early next month for work to reduce the risk of falling debris.

The closure is in effect from Sept. 3 to Oct. 15, or until further notice, according to an Alberta Parks advisory.

“TransAlta is conducting rockfall mitigation work in the vicinity; to protect visitors the trail and climbing routes will remain closed for the duration of the project,” the advisory states.

Rock scaling removes loose and unstable rock from a rock face but can pose a risk of dangerous rockfall. The work is intended to protect TransAlta’s canal infrastructure and employees while engaged in maintenance work in the Spray Canal. The closure of the access bridge is to protect the public while the work above that section of the canal is underway.

“TransAlta’s rockfall mitigation work is necessary to ensure the continued safety of our operations,” a statement from the company’s media relations team notes.

“Our priority is to complete the maintenance work efficiently while limiting the disruption to trail users.”

The closure includes the trailhead access bridge.

“While Ha Ling Trail access is closed, visitors can enjoy a safe and memorable time outdoors by choosing different hiking trails that match their skill level while ensuring they are properly prepared for their activity,” said Alberta Forestry and Parks assistant communications director Rob Williams, in an email.

“More information on alternate routes is available at one of the region’s four visitor centres.”
