KANANASKIS COUNTRY – Fire crews were quick to extinguish a small wildfire near the banks of the Upper Kananaskis Lake in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park earlier this afternoon.
The fire was first assessed Wednesday (Aug. 14) at 1:58 p.m. at 0.01 hectares in size and doused within 40 minutes. It was located near the lake's main dam.
The cause is being investigated.
Fire danger in the Calgary Forest Area (CFA), which includes Kananaskis Country, the Bow Valley and Îyârhe (Stoney) Nakoda First Nation is rated moderate as of Monday (Aug. 12).
There are two active wildfires in the CFA at Burstall Lake – classified as under control at 1.2 hectares, and west of Water Valley – under control at 48.8 hectares.
There have been 70 wildfires in the CFA since Jan. 1, burning a total 63.39 hectares. So far this year, wildfires have burned 635,572 hectares across Alberta.
A fire ban that was in place for the CFA during hot, dry conditions earlier this summer, has since been lifted.
