Wildfire north of Lake Louise classifed as 'being held'

A wildfire south of Hector Lake near Lake Louise is classified as being held as a fire crew and helicopter fight to bring it under control

BANFF – A wildfire south of Hector Lake near Lake Louise is classified as being held as a fire crew and helicopter fight to bring it under control.

In a statement at about 1 p.m. on Friday (July 26), Parks Canada said the wildfire in Banff National Park likely won't spread under the current conditions with the helicopter and firefighters available.

Temperatures have dropped and Parks Canada says the 10-15 mm of rain that fell on Thursday helped with the fire, known as the Waputik Peak wildfire.

"While conditions made it unsafe for crews to work on the fire, the rain and cooler temperatures greatly reduced fire activity,” states Parks Canada.

“Today (July 26th), a fire crew and a helicopter will work towards bringing the fire under control.”

It is estimated the fire has scorched about six hectares.

“There remains no threat to public safety or infrastructure at this time with no threat to the community of Lake Louise, or the Town of Banff,” states the release.

There are currently no other wildfires burning in Banff National Park.

A fire ban is currently in place in the national park.
